You might think this is an apple core quilt but it's not. Because the colors remind me of the ocean, I decided to give it a different name. Besides, anyone who has ever sewn a swimsuit knows that these "applecore" shapes look exactly like the crotch piece of a swimsuit! So you know when I say "Beach Quilt" I'm really thinking "Crotch Quilt"!
I can't believe the quilt top is actually finished! I rotary cut all the pieces at a Friday evening "Scrap Mania" at our local scrap booking store - of course I was the only one there with quilting. I made the rows at a quilting retreat last fall, and put them together at a friend's house over New Year's. I actually had to slow down for these curves, and that caused lots of whining because I'd rather drive really fast. But it was fun to sew something different than usual.
Last summer during a road trip we found the 8" applecore template at The Little Shop in Haddonfield, NJ. They had a really pretty sample hanging in the shop and I couldn't resist! It was fun to collect fat quarters of large scale prints as we traveled, and when we returned home I found lots more in my stash. Now the quilt is off to the quilter. It's getting a cozy flannel back, perfect for a Minnesota "Beach Quilt".

This turned out great, Terry! So fun to see the finished product after watching you cut them all at the scrapbook store!! And I spy what looks like a really cute pincushion by your sewing machine :)

Love the colors. This quilt does indeed have a "water-y" feel to it in both colors and movement.
Seeing it reminds me that I bought the template before Thanksgiving...the holidays brainwashed me, I think.

The quilt is lap size - it measures 64" x 75", and I plan to bind the curvy edge with bias binding.

I've had this template in my cupboard for about some 10 odd years...but have yet to make it!!

I love it and the fabrics you chose. You are so funny, a crotch quilt! But you are right it is that shape of the bathing suit. Ah, but once it is quilted you have to do that bias binding and then negotiate those curves. Hmmm... can't wait to see it complete!

Those bathig suit pieces were much easier to sew. Brings back memories. thanks for the late night laugh. Love the quilt. Your colors are fab!

Haha -- it's so funny that you've posted this quilt. I have a 1940's one from my Grandma that I have collected some fabrics to reproduce -- I LOVE that pattern. One of my quilty peeps ruined it for me years ago though -- she said the exact same thing that you did about panty liners and now we call that pattern the Kotex pattern!

Love your comments on the shape, really made me laugh and then the comment that Mary Beth made above also made me chuckle. Putting this aside I love the way this has turned out, the colors are cool and as we are building our house by the beach as we speak it makes me love it even more. This is one quilt l'll have to make, l'll have to hunt down the template and get started. But this has got me thinking, how will you finish it, will you put straight boarders on and then bind or will you do a curvy binding!!!!! Good luck

Gee, thanks a lot! Now I am seeing pantyliners after reading your description!!! (Only kidding here!) Your quilt is impressive! I love the use of the large scale prints in such a traditional quilt. I have been acquiring large scale print fabric lately. (I am working on Kim McLean's Lollypop Trees from GloriousColor.com.) I am already looking forward to future projects w/ these fabrics. What are the dimensions of your quilt? Thanks so much!!!!!
